What are you actually buying?

We are explicit about this because it is easy to conflate: Carbon Centric currently operates one facility, Rakkestad. It is fully operational and captures CO₂ from biomass combustion continuously, measured hour by hour. But Rakkestad is a CCU facility: the CO₂ is delivered for industrial use (including to Linde), not for permanent storage. This is public information, not something we hide.

The counter below shows what has been captured at Rakkestad in total. It is a real, live figure that proves our technology works at industrial scale, but it is not the counter for what you are buying here.

Rakkestad may be converted to permanent storage in the future. An assessment of this is underway, but it is not confirmed yet, and we will say so plainly if and when it happens. Until then, Rakkestad is a CCU facility.

What you are buying here is a commitment tied to Kirkenær, our next project, built in partnership with Solør Bioenergi. Unlike Rakkestad, Kirkenær is designed for permanent geological storage from day one (a so-called BECCS project). Kirkenær is not yet capturing CO₂. The facility is under development, with planned start-up in 2028.

The exact storage location for Kirkenær has not been finalised. It could, for example, be Northern Lights. This same principle already applies to credits Carbon Centric has sold to corporate customers such as DNV: they are pre-purchases of future credits from Kirkenær and similar projects, delivered once capture has actually taken place.

When you pay today, you enter into an agreement with us that a specific quantity of CO₂, captured at Kirkenær once the facility is complete, will be permanently stored within an agreed deadline. This is the same principle used by Climeworks and other credible players in the industry: pay now for a commitment, receive confirmation once the work is actually done.

Progress is tracked through a recognised third-party certification methodology that requires long-term, documented storage duration for something to count as genuine removal. Kirkenær has passed Puro.earth's Preliminary Assessment, which confirms that the project is structured according to the methodology's requirements. That is a step on the way, not a finished certification, and Puro will not necessarily remain the only standard we use. We do not use the word "removal" for anything until the requirements are actually met.

If we fail to meet the commitment within the agreed deadline, you get your money back. This is not just wording in our terms. Your payment is booked as a liability on our side, not as revenue we have already spent, precisely for this reason.
