On Tuesday 22 September, Carbon Centric hosted a Carbon Removal Seminar organised by Deloitte at the carbon capture plant in Rakkestad. The day focused on sustainability reporting, transition plans and why companies should start engaging with durable carbon removal now.
The seminar was led by Torleiv S. Grimsrud and Frithjof Grønlien from Deloitte, together with Espen Skaar from Carbon Centric. The programme covered the regulatory landscape and relevant guidelines, technology insights from a plant in operation, and why companies should start engaging with durable carbon removals now.
Regulation sets the direction
During the day, several developments were highlighted as reasons why carbon removal will become more important going forward:
- The SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 clarifies the role of carbon removal on the path to net zero, with a gradual ramp-up from 2035 for larger companies.
- The EU has established the CRCF, a common framework for certifying carbon removals and carbon farming.
- The EU Buyers' Club will aggregate demand and help build a European market for CRCF-certified units.
- The European Commission's July 2026 proposal for a revised Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) opens for central purchasing of up to 250 million tonnes of permanent carbon removals in the period 2031–2040.
The technology in practice
Participants were also given a tour of the plant. The Rakkestad plant captures CO₂ from Østfold Energi's waste-to-energy plant and supplies liquid CO₂ to industry (CCU). The operational experience gained here feeds into the development of the company's BECCS projects, which will deliver permanent carbon removal with geological storage.
Seeing the technology at work gives the discussion on transition plans a concrete starting point. Carbon Centric thanks Deloitte and all participants for good questions and engaging discussions.
