Carbon Centric has officially opened Norway’s first operational carbon capture plant outside the Longship programme, and one of the world’s first full-scale carbon capture facilities at a waste-to-energy plant.
Carbon Centric has officially opened its first full-scale carbon capture facility in Rakkestad. The plant is the first operational carbon capture facility in Norway outside the Longship programme, and one of the first of its kind globally at a waste-to-energy facility.
The official opening was marked by an inauguration ceremony led by Carbon Centric’s co-founders, Fredrik Häger and Kenneth Juul. The event also featured speeches from State Secretary Astrid Bergmål from the Norwegian Ministry of Energy and the French Ambassador to Norway, Florence Robine, along with several other distinguished speakers.
The ceremony gathered national and international partners, customers and guests, reflecting the strong interest in scalable carbon capture solutions and the growing importance of concrete climate action.
The Rakkestad facility captures CO₂ from Østfold Energi’s waste-to-energy plant and delivers the CO₂ as recycled, food-grade liquid CO₂ for industrial use. The plant has a capture capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes per year and demonstrates that industrial carbon capture projects can be realised within a short timeframe, from investment decision to operation.
This milestone confirms that carbon capture is no longer just a plan, it is happening.
The project has been made possible through close collaboration with Østfold Energi, Enova and a broad group of industrial and financial partners, including Obligo, Vardar AS, Shell Catalysts & Technologies, Technip Energies, KANFA, SLÅTTLAND, DNB and KODE15.
Next in line is Carbon Centric’s BECCS project in Kirkenær, developed together with Solør Bioenergi. The project aims to capture approximately 32,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually and to begin delivering carbon removal certificates from 2028.
Carbon Centric is proud of the team, partners and owners who have made this milestone possible and looks forward to scaling carbon capture across Norway and the Nordic region.
