This week, the Ministry of Energy marked the official launch of Longship with a two-day event at the Oslo Opera House and at Heidelberg Materials in Brevik. The launch of Longship represents an important step for the future of carbon removal. In addition to establishing the world’s first full value chain for carbon capture and storage, Norway and Switzerland announced a pilot collaboration for managing carbon removal across borders, under article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.
Carbon Centric is part of this collaboration and had the opportunity to present our contribution to the pilot on stage. We announced our partnership with Climeworks, which supplies carbon removal credits to, among others, the City of Zurich. Our contribution is to deliver credits (CDRs) from the BECCS Kirkenær project, a woodchip-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant operated by Solør Bioenergi. Operations are targeted to start in 2028.

The project is part of a pilot agreement between Norway and Switzerland that enables countries to collaborate on climate action and trade so-called Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs). This is one of the world’s very first agreement of its kind. The pilot demonstrates how international cooperation can help deliver practical solutions to meet global climate goals.

Climeworks is proud to partner with City of Zurich and IWB Industrielle Werke Basel in securing the world’s first international transfer of durable, verifiable carbon removal credits fully aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement from our sourcing partner Carbon Centric in Norway.

This is an important step for both Carbon Centric and the market for carbon removals! We are proud to take part in this pilot and to collaborate with Climeworks, one of the world’s leading companies in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
